Campsite at Twin Lakes

We woke up this morning to rain. We were so glad that we learned from our previous experience to go ahead and put up the tarp. We had just enough overhang to put our feet on dry ground when we stepped out of the camper. By 8:30 am, it had cleared enough to fix a wonderful breakfast of blueberry bacon pancakes.

We headed north toward Houghton, MI in search of a cell signal and WiFi. We stopped at Walmart to pick up a few things, then ran thru the car wash, and into McDonald's for a drink and free Wi-Fi. Say what you will about McDonald's, everywhere we go, they are the one place we are certain to find free Wi-Fi. So, this blog is brought to you by McDonald's.

With our late start this morning and our longer-than-expected stay at McDonald's, we decided to cut out some of our sightseeing and took a shorter-than-planned route home.

FYI, Houghton is on the "upper peninsula of the Upper Peninsula". It is home to Michigan Technology University and there were some gorgeous waterfront properties, many of which were part of Greek Row. Where did fraternities and sororities get that kind of money?

Rather than eat lunch at McDonald's, we felt certain we could find a place to eat along the scenic shoreline of Lake Superior. These people must not eat out much. We drove for 40 miles before finally finding a restaurant that was open. By this point, Pam was a little grouchy, to say the least.

We finally ate lunch on the waterfront in L'Anse, MI.

When we arrived back at camp it was only 67 degrees and about 4:30 in the afternoon. Within an hour of getting back to camp, it started to rain. We sat in the screen tent all wrapped up in blankets and listened to the rain while trying to figure out what to do for dinner as we really didn't want to stand out in the rain and cook or do a lot of dishes.

Rob had half a sandwich left over from lunch and Pam had instant oatmeal in a paper bowl. By 8 pm, the rain seems to have stopped for a while. How long, remains to be seen. It is still fully light and seems crazy to go to bed so early, so we will kick back, read, and enjoy the evening in our screen tent (which is more waterproof than we ever imagined it would be). Listen to the rain below.

We kept hearing very "lonely" sounds coming from the lake. Turns out, it was a Common Loon. You can listen to the sound here.

Lesson learned:
Pam gets "hangry" if not fed at regular intervals. We must carry some source of protein in the car.
