High Cliff State Park continued - July 14, 2023

We are planning a second night at this campground, we decided to use today to tour Door County, WI. This is the peninsula on the east side of Green Bay, which is a part of Lake Michigan.

As we drove through Green Bay, questions arose like "How did Green Bay Packers get their name?" "What did they pack?" One would think the answer was cheese. One would be wrong. Here is part of a San Diego Reader article we found: "What do the Green Bay Packers pack? Cheese? Meat. Good ol' American red meat. Earl Lambeau hustled $500 from fellow employees at the Indian Packing Company in Green Bay, bought football jerseys, and named his squad the Packers. That was 1919. From more donations, the players received $16.75 each at the end of the season. They went pro in 1921. It's the only NFL team that's never moved from its original city. But only because it's too cold for all of them to get their cars started at the same time."

We arrived at Sturgeon Bay and decided to visit the Door County Historical Museum. From the outside, the building looked small but we were surprised to find out how big the inside actually was. We started out looking at a wildlife exhibit and ended up spending most of our time in that one area. If you are ever in Sturgeon Bay, we would highly recommend this museum.

We drove up the east side of the peninsula which was largely farm and forest land dotted with small communities. We ate lunch at Bailey's Harbor and then headed north to Sister Bay. As we were coming into Sister Bay, the traffic became heavier and heavier, we decided not to continue to the end of the peninsula, but to turn and go home down the west side of the peninsula through Fish Creek and Egg Harbor. These were cute little tourist towns but there were lots of boats, lots of traffic, and lots of people. It was a little too much for us so we didn't even stop to take pictures and we just headed back to camp. We did take one detour to avoid some of the traffic and ended up on Cottage Row where we saw multi-million dollar estates right on the shore of Lake Michigan. Unbelievable!

Among other things, Door County is known for its cherries, so we did stop and pick up some cherry amaretto jam and ate some cherry ice cream.

Traveling back, the traffic headed the other way was insane! We picked the right time to travel in both directions.

We were watching the national weather and watching a major storm to the south and east of us and were trying to decide our next destination. So we stopped at McDonald's for the free Wi-Fi and researched campground possibilities to the southwest of us. Unfortunately, this was late Friday afternoon and NOTHING was available for Saturday night. Looks like we will take off in the morning and see what we can plan on the road.

Sorry, no pictures to post today.
