Destination High Cliff State Park, Sherwood, WI - July 13, 2023

Last night, we were expecting rain so we packed the majority of our gear before we went to bed and planned to get up early, leave and eat breakfast out. When we awoke we were pleasantly surprised to find it had not rained, but we still got an early start  We said goodbye to Lake Superior and drove south along the Lake Michigan shoreline. It didn't look that different from Lake Superior, although, it wasn't as blue as where we had just been at Pictured Rocks.

As we began to leave the Northwoods behind and come into a rolling landscape with fewer trees and more farms, we realized we had missed more open vistas. We enjoyed the beauty of all the trees, but we must be Midwesterners/Westerners after all. We need to be able to see some distance.

We headed toward High Cliff State Park on Lake Winnebago in Sherwood, WI. Part of how we decide where to go is based on availability at a campground. They had two spots available, so we grabbed one. It is strange to choose a campground/campsite, sight unseen, but when there are only two sites available, we take our chances. We have been fortunate so far.

Because we were entering the land of breweries, we began to see talk of ales, lagers, porters, stouts, etc. We realized we didn't even really know what those things are or the differences. As we were traveling, we started doing some research on beer. When we stopped for groceries, there was a deal on beer from local breweries. We picked six different flavors and will see what we like best.

We had a full cell signal until we turned in to our campsite at which time it dropped to near zero. Guess we will be looking for McDonald's tomorrow.

This is a beautiful campground on a high cliff. You can see the lake through the treetops, barely. Because of the haze in the air, it is hard to distinguish the sky from the lake. The most fascinating feature of the area itself is the high cliff and rock formations sculpted by the glaciers, created by God. No mosquitos, no rain (yet), and beautiful temperatures - what more could you ask for?

Destination Grand Lake, OK

We woke up this morning to gentle rain and enjoyed the comfort of our warm and dry camper until the rain stopped. When we finally crawled out of bed, we were pleased to find that the screened tent was also dry, except where we left the windows open. After having a cup of coffee, we decided to forego touring the Caverns and opted to pack up and eat breakfast down the road. 818 Diner in Alva, OK looked promising and we were not disappointed. Breakfast was excellent, reasonably priced and the waitress was very friendly.  We arrived at the home of John, Nancy, and Willie Mayes (Rob's brother, sister-in-law, and their 19-year-old cat) and talked way into the evening with Rob and John telling stories the other one had never heard before. For those who don't know, John is eleven years older than Rob and because of that age difference, they basically lived separate lives. Costa Rica continued - June 19, 2023

Today, we w ent shopping at the local market for fresh fruit and meat, then to the super mercado for packaged items, then to the panaderìa (bakery) for a couple of baguettes and pastries. We came home to a fresh cup of coffee (brewed in a chorreador ) and quickly consumed our pastries. One of the baguettes was cut and served with cream cheese and a yellow flesh avocado that had a slightly sweeter taste than the avocados we are accustomed to eating. The chorreador in Bill's kitchen Ilse does tutoring and had one or two students each day so today we needed to find a way to occupy ourselves for a few hours. We ventured into Liberia to Wal-Mart (without Bill). This was about a 40-minute trip with only one turn, so we felt comfortable with finding our own way. Since Wal-Mart is air-conditioned, we spent a fair amount of time there wandering up and down every aisle. Destination Twin Lakes State Park, Twin Lakes, Michigan - July 9, 2023

Last night we decided to get a jump on packing up for the day, we removed the tarp which provides a little bit of rain protection in the event of nighttime trips to the porta-potty. When we woke this morning, it had rained during the night and our shoes were wet. Hmmmm, sounds like a lesson learned. We headed toward the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with no specific destination in mind but we did have plans to visit some waterfalls along the way.  We stopped at Copper Falls State Park and it was well worth the cost of a day-use fee to the park.  Copper Falls We thought the falls got its name from the color of the water. As it turns out, it actually came from the fact that in the early 1900s, miners explored the area expecting to find copper. They dug several mines and came up with nothing.
